German warfare placed great hopes in the use of the technically advanced ships and assigned them important tasks: Reconnaissance in the North and Baltic Seas, securing and supporting the mine search units, sighting and reporting enemy naval forces and mine barrages, as well as reporting on merchant ship traffic.
