In this article for History Workshop, I explore how foreign war volunteers are buried and remembered, and what their graves reveal about belonging, loyalty, and national memory. Moving from the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War to foreign volunteers fighting in Ukraine today, I examine what happens when soldiers die fighting for a country that is not their own—and who ultimately claims and commemorates their dead.
